E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
This blog will explain the what the film is about and my impressions and interpretations of the film.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982) is a kids film made by Steven Spielberg, it was one of films that kickstarted Spielberg’s career and became much of a children’s film and more of a family film. It is about a friendly alien who is accidentally left on earth and accepted into a house by a group of siblings. It’s then hunted by the government until the final scene where it escapes earth. The characters are E.T and Elliott Taylor; the side characters are Gertie Taylor and Micheal Taylor; finally the ‘antagonist’ is a character represented by the keys he carries. E.T and Elliot are found out to be linked emotionally and both become sick while E.T is on earth.
The story uses a very linear narrative with simple symbolisation appropriate for children. For example E.T heals a flower which is uses to show the state of E.T health as he becomes more and more sick. The story is also entirely continuity editing with scene happening after each other. Although this is simplistic Spielberg still made and interesting story throughout and wholesome ending.
In my opinions the film is well made and extends beyond the title of ‘children movie’ being appropriate for all most age groups. The film is good at creating a blond between you and characters and creates a good ending with everything being tied up nicely. I Particularly enjoyed some the first scenes where they trying to under eat and also the scene with the house being taken over as it very emphasised This makes the film a 4/5 stars.
