The film is about a girl named Christine who likes to call themselves Lady Bird. She is shown in the film to be coming of age. It Shows the hardships and life of someone who is going through this. Eventually Lady bird and her family consisting of her mum, dad, brother (Miguel) and his girlfriend (Shelly) split up with Lady Bird going to a school on the east coast. Narrative is structured to be episodic, with things happening close together then short period of filler showing some of the mundanity of everyday high school life.
Film is a somewhat a teenage film but focuses on a coming of age sub genre. Film conforms to many of the genre features of these films taking pace primarily in a school or Lady Bird’s house. The development of the character Lady Bird also conforms with many of the genre conventions. She makes friends loses them and then turns back to her old friends which is shown to be a much better lifestyle.
The film also conveys a few of ideologies of feminism which at the time was not as popular as it is today. An example of this could be in the speech scene where Lady Bird speaks out against the person speaking and gets a suspension. This is used by Greta Gerwig to show this idea was viewed at the time with gena Her friend at the time ducking down to show she has nothing to do with it.
The idea at the core of the film is missing what You leave behind This is seen when she returns to Judy, Remises about Sacramentum or when she visits the church because she misses her catholic school. This in vast contrast to the first part of movie where she applies for a east coast school behind her mums back. It shows how she misses these elements of her life.
The film mainly represents people who are coming of age an their families. It shows this time period as one of hardships but triumph as ultimately Ladybird gets to the school she wants to.
My favourite sequence was when Lady Bird and Julie look for houses it sets up the rest of the movie in a very interesting way. It also establishes Lady Bird’s family as poor. In general I would give the film a 3.5/5 stars as it was good but I was not my favourite genre
